Having either played, or coached, on Nebraska soccer fields for the last 41 years, I know that not all fields are created equal.  Some fields can be like plush carpet while others are bumpy disasters.  Unfortunately, these bumpy fields can often lead to ankle sprains.

One thing that happens with ankle sprains is that the joint loses its proprioceptive abilities.  What is proprioception?  Our body relies on three systems for balance, our vision, our inner ear and our joint sensors.  Each joint in our body contains nerves, or sensors, that send signals to the brain about where the joint is in relation to the world around us.  These sensors are our very own internal GPS system.  Following injury, our GPS system goes “off-line”, not providing information up to the brain.  This will cause our balance to be poor in an already susceptible, recently injured joint.  A significantly important part of physical therapy following an injury, or recent surgery, is restoring your proprioception.

Not all physical therapy clinics are created equal.

At CORE physical therapy, we will progressively challenge your balance so you can learn how to safely jump, land, fall or change direction again.  Learning to be in control during highly dynamic movements is crucial to safely returning to the sport you love.
