Dry needling has been widely researched throughout Europe and the United States for more than 20-30 years. Here we examine yet another study confirming the efficacy of its use when appropriate.
The conclusion here is quite clear during this high powered study; Dry needling is effective for treatment of OA and managing s/s.
Does it fix your OA? No, it does not, but it does receive the compensation muscular pain that results from the OA and compensation. As a result, muscles are overworking and tightening up, this causes contractures and stiffness to result. This will lead to decreased ROM as well, and later strength loss and activity loss as well.
Dry needling is safe and effective for use for management of s/s of the arthritic conditions of the hip and other joints. Although very different than acupuncture, it carries much more scientific research supporting its use while treating patients. Furthermore, Dry needling is only a part of a rehabilitation program and is not a substitute for solid manual therapy, Range of motion and correction exercises, and strengthening for the hip, core and lower extremities.
