Kirk’s Success Story

Kirk is an avid water slalom and trick skier competing nationally for many years.

While practicing on the water on the morning of July 17th, 2016 Kirk experienced a significant injury to his right lower leg and ankle.

Kirk suffered significant fractures of his tibia causing splintering and breaking into multiple small pieces.

Kirk underwent surgery to repair the leg a few days later on July 21st.  The break was so severe he required a bone graft, plate, and 10 screws.

His next battles would be healing, recovery, and rehab.   His surgeon was unsure if he would ever run, jump, or ski again due to the severity of the break and surgery.  He was also advised that his ankle would likely develop arthritis causing the need for a potential ankle replacement down the road.

Kirk entered rehab determined to not only walk normally again, but to get back to slalom and trick skiing.

He began the journey of recovery and rehab in a solid boot and knee scooter for mobility.  He was able to gradually progress into his first weight bearing through the injured leg at the end of September.

From there, with Kirk’s incredible work ethic and determination, it was only a matter of time until he was able to restore his normal ankle mobility, strength, balance, and walking mechanics.

Only one hurdle remained.

On May 25th, 2017 Kirk was able to hit the water again and return to the sport he loves.

He has since been able to climb national rankings and personal bests as though he never missed a beat.
